Our Pastor

Rev. Amelia Fulbright

The Rev. Amelia Fulbright is a pastor, author, and advocate living in Austin, TX. Since her ordination in 2008, Amelia has served congregations in progressive Baptist, UCC, and ecumenical settings, most recently as the Designated Senior Pastor of University Baptist Church in Austin. Previously, Amelia was the founding pastor of Labyrinth Progressive Student Ministry, where she ministered from 2013-2020.

In 2013, Amelia joined a small clergy advisory committee that helped to found Just Texas, a grassroots movement of people of faith committed to advocating publicly for reproductive justice and full LGBTQ equality in Texas. She continues to be a vocal representative for Just Texas and in addition has participated with a variety of other social justice organizations locally and nationally, including the Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, Texas Impact, Faith In Texas, The Dialogue Institute, Transgender Education Network of Texas, Workers Defense Project, and the Poor People’s Campaign.

Prior to pastoring, Amelia earned a BA in World Religions and Spanish from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC and the MDiv from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. She also developed a social work skill set, first as a mental health case manager in Cincinnati, OH, and later as a crisis counselor for the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

Amelia was born and spent part of her childhood in Zambia, Africa and the rest of her childhood in various parts of North Carolina. As a product of both the American South and the global south, she has developed a love for both African harmonies and rhythms and the high lonesome sound of a banjo and a bluegrass singer. Living at this intersection also has instilled within her a deep longing for racial equity and economic justice worldwide, from the Zambian Copper Belt to the coal mines of Appalachia.

When she is not pastoring or writing, Amelia makes a life with her spouse, Jonathan, and their two young children. When the public health situation permits, she loves traveling, live music, and a good meal out. She has survived the pandemic with a queue of good podcasts, biweekly therapy, cold brew in the morning, and an occasional glass of dry Prosecco.
