Rev. Van Herd, Adult Christian Education
Van is a native of Oklahoma, where he is an alumnus of the University of Oklahoma (Ph. D.) and Phillips Theological Seminary (M. Div.). Before coming to Texas, he spent several years teaching in Oklahoma and New Mexico. He also studied at Loma Linda University School of Medicine and several other universities. He has served as pastor of 2 churches in Oklahoma; his longest ministry was with St. John's UCC in Okeene, OK. While there, he served as President of the Oklahoma Association (UCC) and Chair of the Committee on Ministry. He is also an organist.
He came to the University of Texas at Austin as a post-doctoral fellow in science and associate research scientist. He continues in a similar capacity as an instructor in mathematics, as well as working with the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas. He is passionate about both theology and science, and is convinced that they are both two sides of a beautiful jewel. For this reason, he is particularly glad to serve as our Minister of Adult Education, whom we share in an ecumenical relationship with 2 other sister churches near the UT campus.
