CHURCH COMMUNITY
This Sunday, May 19, is Pentecost Sunday. Well be reading and reflecting on passages from Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel According to John, and worshipping with Christian liturgies from around the world.
Following worship this Sunday, well be hosting a Forum on affordable housing (or the lack thereof in Austin), and the possible city bond election this fall that would provide funds for affordable housing if passed. Walter Moreau, Executive Director of Foundation Communities will speak and show the Keep Austin Affordable video. Well discuss how folks in our church can do more to support affordable housing in Austin.
The Talent Show will be held on Friday, May 17, beginning with soup at 6 pm. See Nodie Murphy or e-mail her at nodienice at gmail dot com to enter the line-up of acts. There are only three requirements: 1) Use G-rated material; 2) Take less than 3 minutes; 3) Have fun! Come reveal your hidden talents. We cant wait!
CUE Seminaries Book Collection for the SCC Annual Meeting
The Conference CUE Seminaries Committee is sponsoring a Book Sale at the Annual Conference in May to raise funds (as an extra gift) for CUE Seminaries. Both hard books and paper backs on all topics are needed. If you wish to donate books, bring them with you to the church fellowship hall, any Sunday until the Annual meeting in late May. Look for the donation box and CUE seminaries sign. Spring clean your book shelves! Donate a few books and support CUE Seminaries! For more information contact Beth Gleason, Brazos Association CUE representative and CCA church representative to the Annual Meeting.
"New Class on the Parables of Jesus. Beginning June 9th, Greg Futch will lead a lecture and discussion class on the parables of Jesus. He wants to emphasize that all folks are encouraged to attend, even those who have never come to the adult education class at 10:00 am. There will be presentations on at least 5 or 6 of the famous stories from the Gospels, and in-depth looks at the way these parables have been interpreted through time. Are they still relevant today? Each Sunday class will be a stand-alone session, so come to any or all. Join the discussion!!!"
Slumber Falls Camp offers a splendid variety of theme camps throughout the summer for our youth. Eco-Camp, to be held from June 16 - 22, for campers age 9 -12, will be directed by Beth Gleason this year and she is seeking volunteer adult, college or High School aged counselors. Couples are welcome, free room & board for the week. If you like kids and want to learn more about the environment this could be one of the highlights of your 2013 summer ; For more information contact Beth directly.

Several folks in our church are committed to starting a Congregational Church of Austin Green Team, which will explore how to make our church more green. Well be exploring the process of green certification set forth by Greenfaith.org, and hopefully, working in conjunction with other faith communities in Austin looking to become better stewards of the environment. If youre at all interested, or would like more information, please talk to Tom VandeStadt, Liz Nash, or Marilyn Vache.

For those of us who feel called to affirm God's creation and take on environmental faith projects, the UCC is sponsoring Mission 4/1 Earth between Easter Sunday and Pentecost Sunday (April 1 to May 19). This is a challenge for our UCC churches to collectively offer more than one million hours of engaged earth care (clean up, advocacy, education and behavioral changes); collectively plant more than 10,000 trees locally and globally in partnership with the Arbor Day foundation and denominational partners; and collectively send more than 100,000 advocacy letters on environmental concerns. See http://www.ucc.org/earth/about.html to join this effort.
